South Dakota is an essentially Republican-dominated state and has not backed any Democrat since 1940. Only in 1964, did a Democrat Lyndon Johnson win the presidential elections. Keeping in line with the Republican lineage, the 2008 presidential elections in the state were also won by the Republicans. Republican nominee John McCain carried the state by an 8.4% margin of victory. As in the 2004 elections, maximum votes for the winning party came from the Minnehaha County, while Buffalo County earned the least number.
