Since 1984, when Reagan won with about 52% of the vote, Rhode Island has not backed any Republican for president. As the map shows, the 2008 United States presidential elections in the state also saw a massive victory of the Democratic party. Democratic nominee Barack Obama flipped the state into the Democratic column with a 27.8% margin of victory. In both the 2004 and 2008 elections, the maximum votes for the Democratic party came from the Providence County, while the county of Bristol earned the least number of votes for the Democrats.
