As the map shows, the 2004 United States presidential elections in Massachusetts were won by the Democrats. Democrat nominee John Kerry carried the state by a 25.2% margin of victory. Massachusetts is an essentially Democratic state; since 1988 the state has not seen a Republican presidential nominee win a single county. Continuing the trend, the 2008 United States presidential elections in Massachusetts saw a massive victory of the Democratic party as it swept away with all the twelve electoral votes. Democrat nominee, Barack Obama emerged victorious by a 25.8% margin of victory. The Democratic party backed 61.80% of the popular vote to Republican's 35.99%. In both 2004 and 2008 elections, Middlesex County earned the maximum votes for the winning party, while the least number came from Nantucket County.
