Maryland has a reliably Democratic history in presidential elections, so the victory came as no surprise; the last time any Republican carried the state was in 1988. Maintaining their grip on the levers of power, the 2008 United States presidential elections in the state were also won by the Democratic party. Democratic nominee Barack Obama carrying the state by a 25.4% margin of victory. The victory in Maryland for Barack Obama was his best performance in a southern state. He maintained his grip on all the ten electoral votes of the state winning 61.92% of the popular vote to Republican John McCain's 36.47%. As in the 2004 elections, the maximum votes for the winning party came from Prince George's County, while the Garrett County earned the least number of votes for the Democrats.
