The 2004 United States presidential elections in the District of Columbia saw a massive victory of the Democratic party.Democratic candidate John F. Kerry won with a margin of victory of 79.84% over the incumbent George W. Bush.

Continuing the trend, the 2008 United States presidential elections in the state were also won by the Democrats. The Democrat nominee, Barack Obama's victory sparked off jubilant celebrations in the national capital. Obama emerged victorious with a total of 210,403 votes as against the Republican senator, John McCain who managed fetching 14,821 votes.
