National Westminster Bank USA was created in 1968 with the merger of National Provincial Bank and Westminster Bank. The bank with 3,600 branches developed a wide range of new services, including the bank's first credit card. Later, National Westminster Bank USA began other services such as telephone banking and touch-screen share, which was meant to assist the government's privatization program. 1980s saw the establishment of National Westminster Home Loans and Small Business Unit. The Switch debit card extended the electronic transfer of money in 1988. Gradually in 1990 the bank adopted the name NatWest. National Westminster Bank USA has over 7.5 million personal customers and 850,000 small business accounts. The bank also offers 24-hour telephone and internet banking services. National Westminster Bank USA also reintroduction a mobile banking service, which provides banking facilities to remote communities in Cornwall. In 2000, the Royal Bank of Scotland Group completed the acquisition of National Westminster Bank USA in a £21 billion deal. The bank is now part of a financial services group, the second largest bank by market capitalization in UK and Europe and attains fifth position in the world. |
