The city of Mobile is the third most populous city of the state of Alabama. It is also the county seat of Mobile County. The city derives its name from the Mobile (Mauvile or Maubila) Indians which were present in this area at the time of its formation. Significantly, it is the only saltwater port in the State of Alabama. It is located on the northwest shore of the Mobile Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. It enjoys a mild subtropical type of climate with tremendous rainfall. Due to its proximity with the Gulf of Mexico, it often faces the fury of tropical storms and hurricanes, as and when they appear.
Though the city has a highly developed infrastructure, complemented by technological developments, it has quite surprisingly maintained an atmosphere of friendliness and cooperation among its citizens. It has been honored with an “All-America City” designation, by the National Civic League. Citizens as well as outsiders regard it as one of the most comfortable and peaceful destinations to live or just to spend one’s holidays. According to certain surveys, it is also regarded as the top 3 most preferred housing or real estate markets in the country. Mobile was ranked at the 11th spot (at a tie with Fort Lauderdale) in Time Magazine's 1997 list of 15 of the hottest job destinations. Famous sites such as Bellingrath Gardens and Battleship Park have made it a popular tourist destination. Visitors to Mobile can seek the pleasures of exploring, participating and enjoying the Mardi Gras celebrations.
