As per the United States Census Bureau the aggregate area of Kansas City is 318 square miles. 313.5 square miles out of this area is land and 4.5 square miles is filled with water. Majority of the urban areas in Kansas City is on top of bluffs that overlook the rivers and their bottoms areas.
Kansas City proper resembles a bowl and is surrounded to its south and north by bedrock and limestone cliffs, which were carved out by glaciers. As per the Kansas map the city is located at the junction between Minnesota and Dakota ice lobes.
The Missouri and Kansas rivers had cut wide valleys into the city's terrain during the draining and melting of glaciers at the time of Pleistocene Epoch's maximum late Independence Glaciation. The central part of this city has been crossed by a spillway valley that is partially filled.
This valley is the eastern extension of Turkey Creek Valley and is home to Union Station. Recently the municipal water of this city was ranked the cleanest of the 50 biggest cities in USA.
Kansas City Neighborhoods
There are at least 240 neighborhoods in Kansas City. Some of these areas have existed as free cities, and witnessed major historic events. Downtown, which is at the heart of the city, is presently being redeveloped. Several new condos, offices and apartments are supposed to come up at this location.
The Power & Light District is going to be a major entertainment and shopping destination for people in the city. It is supposed to have bars, a theater, restaurants, The Sprint Center and a grocery store named The Jones, which will have a roof top pool club.
There is a diverse group of neighborhoods near Downtown such as Westport, 18th and Vine Historic District, Ivanhoe, Pendleton Heights, Hyde Park, Quality Hill, Squire Park, West Bottoms, Crossroads Arts District and River Market.
Briarcliff is an upcoming posh neighborhood in Kansas City and is located a few minutes away from Downtown. It is located in North-land, which is also referred to as north of the River. Country Club Plaza, Brookside and South Plaza are some other popular neighborhoods.
