Hawaii Insurance License




The U.S insurance industry consists of 1600 life and health insurance and 3000 non-life property/casualty insurance companies. It is the worlds largest insurance market and accounts for more than one third of world wide premiums which stood at $2.2 trillion on 1998.

US insurance premiums amounted to$945.9 billion in 2005, according to the National association of Insurance Commissioners. This was down by1.1% from 2004's $956.9 billion. As on 2003 average expenditure on auto insurance in the US, stood at $821 which amounted to a percentage of 5.7% over average expenditure in 2002 Premiums in the property/casualty sector totaled $427.4 billion (excluding state funds), while life/health premiums totaled $518.5 billion.

In Hawaii average expenditure on auto insurance stood at $774.39. Sale Of annuities insurance reached a record $27.3 billion in 2005. There were 2,700 property/casualty insurance companies in the United States in 2004, compared with 2,749 in 2003.

Insurance Companies and agents, their licensing and license renewal etc are under the scope of the Insurance Department under the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

Agents applying for license as producers, adjusters or fraternal benefit society producers are required to appear for and clear an examination that measures the applicant's qualifications and competence.

This prerequisite however does not apply to the following:
  • Applicant for limited licenses, such as Travel Disability and Travel Baggage applications,
  • Applicants who held an insurance license in this State within the last two (2) year period;
  • Individuals who have applied for an insurance producer license in this State and who had been previously certified for the same level of responsibility in another state shall not be required to complete any prior licensing education or examination, if:
    • The individuals are currently accredited in another state; or
    • The application is received within ninety (90) days of the cancellation of the applicants' previous license. However a clearance issued by the previous state declaring that:
  • The applicants were in good standing in that state; or
  • Must be deemed to be held in good standing and/or licensed as per the NAIC records and database.
