Most insurance companies and agents offer two different policies. One policy protects against loss due to damage caused by fire, theft, vandalism, non-hurricane wind damage and liability, among other covered causes of loss.
The second policy protects against fiscal loss due to hurricanes. This coverage is usually triggered by the issuance of a hurricane watch or warning by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, and includes damage occurring within 72 hours following cancellation of the watch or warning. Typically, the hurricane policy carries a separate deductible, which ranges between 1-5% of the sum your home is valuated at.
Until recently, insurance companies providing two policies received hurricane coverage through the Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund (HHRF). However, the HHRF stopped providing policies in December 2000, as there are now numerous sources of private coverage available.
One Policy
In other cases, you will get one policy that covers all kinds of casualties, including hurricane. In this case, there will still be two different articles, one for hurricane and one for all other causes of loss. When taken as a whole, the coverages that you get may not be much dissimilar to the one mentioned above. However, the same insurance company will be liable to settle all of your claims.
