Hawaii Boat Insurance

The island state of Hawaii is special not just because it is an island state but also because it is an ocean state. Love and respect for the ocean is an intrinsic part of Hawaiian culture.
The Hawaiian waters are navigated by every kind of watercraft imaginable, from traditional fishing boats to a more hip dancing and drinking pleasure cruise, and no matter which kind it is what binds them together is shared reverence for the ocean. This is but natural; after all, this is the land that invented surfing.

Boats are omnipresent around the islands. In fact they are just a part of the scenery. Massive commercial vessels come and go; sailboats fly by the trade winds; cruise ships sail from port to port from island to island; fishing boats come and go; harbors are teeming with houseboats; and yachts carry tourists and jet-setters alike.

This huge influx of watercraft has necessitated that Hawaii has an individual department (the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, or DOBOR ) to deal with, govern, and supervise all the boats they use.

If you own a boat (in insurance lingo that reads: a vessel with a specified length and a motor), then you and you watercraft will be under the jurisdiction of this department. That is because the majority of vessels need to be registered and numbered with the state, including motorized personal watercraft. It is DOBOR that handles this process, although that is just one small aspect of the department.

Registration of Boat

Online registration of vessels has not been facilitated. Vessel Registration Office, Oahu can be contacted at the following number - (808) 587-1963.

You must be in possession of the following to be recognized as the owner of the boat.
  • Registration card,
  • A decal for the boat,
  • A certificate of number that needs to be permanently affixed to the vessel.
Boats that are exempt from registration are:-

  • Boats owned by the U.S. government
  • Speedboats only used for racing
  • Sailboats without a motor and less than eight feet long
  • Lifeboats
  • Outriggers, sea kayaks, and other boats driven only by human power (i.e. with oars)
  • Vessels holding a U.S. Coast Guard marine document
