The U.S insurance industry consists of 1600 life and health insurance and 3000 non-life property/casualty insurance companies. It is the worlds largest insurance market and accounts for more than one third of world wide premiums which stood at $2.2 trillion on 1998.
The USA insurance industry employs 909,000 in the life/health insurance sector, 63500 in the property/ casualty insurance sector and 706,000 in brokerage activities, agencies and other insurance related services.
As opposed to the 859 properties and casualty insurers operating in the other states of USA, Georgia had just 38 properties and casualties insurers as on 2005. Total written premiums for all P&C insurers in Georgia stood at $12,262,721,829 and workmen's compensation stood at $1.2 billion.
The Agents Licensing Section is under the jurisdiction Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner regulates the insurance industry with respect to its agents, adjusters, agencies, counselors, and sub-agencies, surplus line brokers in the State of Georgia. This System is also responsible for the licensing, maintenance and renewal of resident and non resident licenses of:-
- Agents - any line or sub-line of life, accident and sickness, property, casualty,
- variable products
- Adjusters - crop hail, independent, public, workers compensation
- Agencies
- Continuing education providers, courses and instructors
- Counselors
- Limited Subagents - any personal line or sub-line of life, accident and sickness,
- property, casualty
- Pre-licensing education providers and instructors
- Staff Adjusters
- Surplus lines brokers
The State of Georgia is party to the Uniform Certificate Authority Application (UCAA ) which allows insurance companies to file copies of the same application in various states. All states that are party to the UCAA are designated as uniform states. Though uniform states perform independent review of applications, the insurers no longer have to go through the hassle of applying in differently formatted forms for an insurance license.

The Examination Sections under Georgia Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner' Department comprised of Market Conduct and Financial Units. The Financial Unit is responsible for conducting examinations for most types of insurers licensed in Georgia. Each examination tests their compliance and knowledge of Georgia laws and the states various rules and regulations of the Department of Insurance, to verify on the financial solvency of the company and to report any of the problems noted.
The Market Conduct Unit is primarily responsible for reviewing the company records and market activities and report on any item of non compliance.
