• On 2nd August, 2006, DHS is working closely with the Department of State to implement the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) . By this initiative, travelers have to present secure identity documentation when entering the United States. The WHTI will ensure free international movement of people and cargo and increase the nation's security.
• On July 28th, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it had received adequate number of H-1B petitions for foreign workers who have earned a master's degree or higher from a US institution to meet the exemption limit of 20,000 established by Congress for fiscal year 2007.
• On 1st August, 2006, ten Middle Eastern and Asian immigrants sued the Government of US, alleging that officials intentionally delayed their U.S. citizenship applications processing.
• On 2nd August, 2006, it was announced by the United States Departments of Justice and Homeland Security that the Department of Justice will despatch 20 Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) to five federal law enforcement districts along the US/Mexico border, viz., the Southern District of Texas, the Western District of Texas, the District of Arizona, the District of New Mexico and the Southern District of California.
• On 28th July, 2006, the Department of Homeland Security announced new security checks as part of the so-called US-VISIT program. Requiring border-crossing documents to include a digital photograph and two fingerprints, the program is being slowly phased in.
