Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest

Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest

Every July 4th, Nathan's Famous hosts a hot dog eating competition at their hot dog stand at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The competition began in 1916, when four immigrants had an argument over which of them was most patriotic, they held a hot dog eating contest to determine the winner.

The competition is held every 4th of July at Nathan's Famous Corporation's original restaurant at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. The competition has been held every year since, except in 1941 and 1971 in protest to war and civil unrest. The event draws many spectators every year, and in recent years, the competition has been broadcast on ESPN.

The winner of the competition receives the Nathan's Mustard Belt, which gets displayed in the winner's home country. The winner also receives a trophy and cases of hot dogs. Cash prizes are given to the top 8 competitors.

Japan's Takeru Kobayashi is a six-time champion from 2001 to 2006. In 2007, he was defeated by American, Joey Chestnut. Chestnut is the reigning champion with four consecutive wins.
