History of American Flag

History of American Flag and Betsy Ross

The popular legend says that Betsy Ross, an upholsterer and seamstress, was asked to make an American flag during the Revolutionary War. The flag she made has 13 red and white stripes and a circle of 13 white stars in the blue rectangle. The circle of stars was meant to represent the equality of the 13 states. The use of 5-pointed stars instead of 6-pointed stars may have been one of Betsy Ross's contributions to the flag's design.

While the story has never been proven to be true, and Betsy Ross's involvement in the flag's creation has been debated, the flag continues to be called the "Betsy Ross flag."

The 13 star flag, adopted on June 14, 1777, was the first official flag of the United States, and remained the official flag for 18 years, until 1795, when new states were added to the union. With each new state admitted to the union, an additional star was added to the flag. The USA flag has gone through many transformations, but the concept has remained the same throughout.

The anniversary of the day Congress adopted the 1st official flag of the United States is celebrated every year on June 14, Flag Day.
