The popular legend says that Betsy Ross, an upholsterer and seamstress, was asked to make an American flag during the Revolutionary War. The flag she made has 13 red and white stripes and a circle of 13 white stars in the blue rectangle. The circle of stars was meant to represent the equality of the 13 states. The use of 5-pointed stars instead of 6-pointed stars may have been one of Betsy Ross's contributions to the flag's design.
While the story has never been proven to be true, and Betsy Ross's involvement in the flag's creation has been debated, the flag continues to be called the "Betsy Ross flag."
The anniversary of the day Congress adopted the 1st official flag of the United States is celebrated every year on June 14, Flag Day.
