American Flag

American Flag is held in high regard and is a widely recognized symbol of the United States of America. The USA flag is made in the colors of the United States: red, white, and blue, which were each attributed with specific meanings when Congress adopted the Great Seal. The red symbolizes hardiness and valor, the white shows purity and innocence, and the blue signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice. The stars are said to symbolize the heavens, while the stripes are rays of light from the sun. The USA flag symbolizes freedom and promotes nationalism.

The flag is used to promote nationalism, especially on national holidays, such as Independence day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, and President's Day.

The current USA flag consists of 13 alternating horizontal red and white stripes: one for each of the original 13 colonies. The top and bottom stripes are both red, so there are 7 red and 6 white stripes. The blue rectangle (called the canton, or union) contains 50 white stars: one for each of the states.

Some of the flag's nicknames are:
  • Stars and Stripes
  • Old Glory
  • the Star-Spangled Banner
