Roman Catholicism In Uruguay

Roman Catholicism in Uruguay is the leading religion in the South American country. Uruguay had long been a secular culture. In the year 1981 the country was divided into 204 diocesan priests and 221 parishes. Roman Catholicism in Uruguay was prevalent in the country and it was evident when in the year 1963, 62 percent of the people declared, themselves to be Catholics.

The Uruguay Roman Catholic Churches is inclusive of the global Roman Catholic Church, which is under the saintly headship of the curia and Pope at Rome. About 66 percent of the total population of Uruguay is Catholics. The secularization in the country of Uruguay had begun with the comparatively trivial role of the church during the era of colonization when compared with the other parts of the Spanish empire.

The division of the state and the Church gave an end to the spiritual disagreement in the country and from that time the Catholic schools have prospered in the country. The progressive drift in the world wide church was powerfully felt at Uruguay under the influence of Pope John XXII AND Pope Paul VI.

The existing constitution gives assurance to the people of Uruguay the freedom of all the religions. All the recorded religious dominations get same conduct under the law including the tax-exempt status. There are very little examples of religious prejudice or narrow-mindedness in the country.
