Religion in Uruguay can be divided into some broad categories. Roman Catholicism is most dominant religion in Uruguay. In the year 1981 Uruguay was divided in 221 parishes and there were 204 diocesan priests. There were also 1,580 nuns and 374 monks.
The 1963 census showed that in Uruguay religion, 62 percent of the Uruguayan people had declared themselves to be Catholics. It was also observed that religious observance was more in the people who belonged to the higher class than among the people belonging to the lower and the middle class.
During 1980s, about 66 percent of the people were estimated to be professed Roman Catholics. The Roman Catholic Church in the country of Uruguay is inclusive of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, which is under the holy guidance of the Pope and curia in Rome.
Secularization began in the country with the relatively minor role of the church during the colonial era as compared to the other areas of the Spanish Empire. During the twentieth century in Uruguay, the sects of Protestants were given much more importance.
In Uruguay the latest situation shows that 52 percent of the people are Roman Catholics, two percent of the people are Jewish, 16 percent of the people are Protestants and other Christians and the remaining 30 percent of the people either belong to some other religion or they are non-professing.
Islam is followed by some people in Uruguay but the percentage of the people who belong to Islam comes to only 0.01 percent of the total Uruguayan population.
