Uruguay Struggle for Independence

Uruguay Struggle for Independence began in the year 1811 and stretched till 1830. The first permanent settlement was established in Uruguay in the year 1624 by the Spanish people. Uruguay was visited by Juan Diaz de Solis, a Spaniard in the year 1516. Later, the Portuguese founded the Colonia del Sacramento town in 1680. In the year 1717, the Portuguese people fortified a hill which was placed at Montevideo.

Later with the help of Brazil and Argentina, the Uruguay Struggle for Independence determined the birth of Uruguay as an independent nation. It was only with the constant efforts of the gaucho, which kept the lamp of the Uruguay Struggle for Independence (1811-30) burning. The personal loyalties, traditions and the rivalries of the gauchos kept the Struggle for Independence in Uruguay a burning issue for almost three quarters of a century.

In the year 1814 Artigas revolted with the assistance of the military junta belonging to Buenos Aires. Thus began a Uruguayan struggle for independence, which continued till the Brazilian occupation of Montevideo in the year 1820.

Brazil was defeated in the year 1827 at Ituzaingo during the Uruguay Struggle for Independence. Great Britain fiercely opposed the Brazilian expansion in the southern regions of Rio de la Plata, which ultimately paid off for the foundation of an independent Uruguay.
