History of Uruguay says that it was originally the homeland of a large group of indigenous people. These indigenous people were mainly the Charruas. Uruguay was visited by Juan Diaz de Solis, a Spaniard, in the year 1516. Later, the Portuguese people came to inhabit the land as conveyed by the History of Uruguay and founded the Colonia del Sacramento town in the year 1680. History of Uruguay also claims that the Spanish snatched the land from the Portuguese in the year 1778. By that time, almost the entire race of the indigenous people had become extinct.
According to the History of Uruguay, the natives, however, revolted against the Spanish invaders in 1811, but later got conquered by the Brazilians. Uruguay History claims that the people of the country ultimately secured their independence in the year 1825 but only with the help of Argentina. The republic of Uruguay was set up in 1828. 1839 to 1851 was the year of absolute unrest in the Uruguayan History because of what seemed as an eternal civil war.
The major export produces of the country have always been wool and meat since the historical times. The 20th century Uruguay History witnessed the setting up of a welfare state by President Jose Batlle y Ordonez.
