The judiciary of Uruguay is independent of the Uruguayan government. The Uruguayan judiciary bears a likeness to Spanish civil laws. This is primarily due to the South American country's settler past.
The judiciary of Uruguay is an arrangement of different justice dispensation structures. The Supreme Court of Uruguay is the highest court in the country. The Supreme Court has under it a collection of lower courts. The lower courts include the criminal court, the appellate court, the lower civil court, the administrative court, the electoral courts and the justices of the peace. The Republic of Uruguay has different courts for civilian and military personnel. The judiciary of Uruguay accepts the jurisdictional supremacy of the International Court of Justice.
