The Sanguinetti government was a civilian government that assumed power in Uruguay in 1985. The Sanguinetti government economy was moderately successful to tackle the various problems of the South American country in the late 20th century.
The Sanguinetti government economy was based on agriculture and its downstream products. Basic agricultural activities like crop production, fishing and livestock generated about 13% of the GDP of the country. The large industrial units in the Republic of Uruguay also depended on agriculture. The majority of the industrial units under President Sanguinetti's rule were engaged in textiles and food processing. This co-operation between industry and agriculture contributed to a combined total of about 33% to the Uruguayan economy.
The Sanguinetti government has to its credit some success in reshaping Uruguay's economy. The South American country recovered through a recession. Unemployment figures fell to 9% in 1987 from 13% in 1985. The rate of inflation also decreased.
