The Uruguay Batllism process constitutes a turning point in the economy of the South American country. The economic reform in Uruguay was started by Jose Batlle y Ordonez.
The aim of Uruguay Batllism was the long term correct development of the economy. The Batllist policies helped to promote the standing of the average hard-working Uruguayan citizen. The reformist policies included legislation that guaranteed a minimum wage for laborers. Other significant reforms include a rest-day after six workdays and old-age pensions for the work-person. A number of business enterprises were nationalized. The ambit of Uruguay Batllism also included the government production of important goods. The economic policies were a stupendous success. Exports doubled during the early 1900's. This trend continued through the First World War.
