The ruler of Abu Dhabi is assigned the post of United Arab Emirates President. The government of United Arab Emirates operates within a framework of federal presidential elected monarch. President of United Arab Emirates is elected by Supreme Council of Rulers for five years.
His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi. He succeeded his father late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in November 2004. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President to introduce a formal government structure. He was deeply moved by the teachings of the Holy Quran. He was instrumental in building up Abu Dhabi as one of the main commercial center of United Arab Emirates. His main emphasis was on building basic housing facilities, schools and health services. Huge financial resources were pumped in for construction of airport and planting more trees in the city. After the withdrawal of British troops from the Gulf in January 1968, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan called for a union. He was a wise statesman to realize that to prosper Abhu Dhabi needs to co-operate with its neighboring unions or states.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan succeeded his father. He has ardently followed the footsteps of his father. On February 1969 he was declared the ruler of Abu Dhabi and he also operated as the Head of Defense. Sheikh Khalifa has taken many positive measures to improve and boost the economy of Abu Dhabi. During his tenure large multi storied buildings were build all over the Emirate. He played a pivotal role in strengthening the country's defense system. Sheikh Khalifa is also the Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. Industry gained a sudden momentum during his tenure. Many ancillary industries and a huge industrial complex at Ruwais came up.
The election of the United Arab Emirates President follows a hereditary pattern. The President is bestowed with enough powers and is an important decision maker in the government and politics of the country.
