United Arab Emirates Parliament plays a pivotal role in the politics of the country. The parliament of United Arab Emirates functions within a framework of a federal presidential elected monarch. The ruler of Abu Dhabi is the President of the United Arab Emirates and is considered to be the head of state. The ruler of Dubai has been assigned the status of Prime Minister of United Arab Emirates and as the head of Government.
The Parliament of United Arab Emirates is also known as Federal National Council. It has 40 members who are elected from each of the emirates. The Federation National Council of United Arab Emirates have been assigned important supervisory role and has all the powers to amend proposed federal legislation. However, the Federation National Council has been bestowed with advisory tasks rather than legislative power. It also reviews proposed legislative laws. The President and the Vice President is elected by the Supreme Council of Rulers every five years. The Supreme Council also elects the Council of Ministers.
The three main branches of United Arab Emirates Parliament are the legislative, executive and the judiciary. Different ministries fall under the executive branch of the Parliament. Ministry of finance and industry, ministry of energy, ministry of education, ministry of foreign affairs fall within jurisdiction of the executive branch of the Parliament.
The first Parliamentary elections of United Arab Emirates were held in 2006. Half of the members of the Federal National Council were elected by the local councils in this election. The remaining 20 members are appointed by the rulers of the constituent states.
