United Arab Emirates festivals and holidays comprise a number of secular and religious events. There are no fixed dates for most of the religious and secular events as they are held on the days according to the Islamic Lunar Calendar. Some of the national holidays in UAE are held on fixed dates every year. The religious festivals depend upon the sighting of moon therefore their dates are subjected to change.
The international New Years Day is observed on 1st January and Islamic New Year is celebrated on 22nd February with thriving parties and carnivals throughout the country. February is also the month of Eid Al Adha. This festival continues for 4 consecutive days with prayer and other religious offerings.
2nd May is a national holiday in UAE. Prophet Mohammad’s birthday is celebrated on this day. Ascension of Mohamed or Lailat al-Mi'raj is observed on 12th September. Both these days people visit mosques and offer prayer to the Prophet.
Al Isra Wal Miaraj and Eid Al Fitr, which is the end of Ramadan, are two very popular religious festivals of United Arab Emirates observed on October and December respectively. December 2nd is the national UAE day, which is another day of festivities and joy.
UAE’s most famous international festival is the Dubai shopping festival. It is referred as the Mecca of shopping in Dubai. The festival is held during the end of December and it continues for a month. Around three million people visit Dubai to shop making the city the tourists’ capital of UAE.
