Kasubi Tombs



The Kasubi tombs also known as the Ssekabaka's tombs are unique in their concept and construct. Located on the Kasubi Hill in the enclosure of the royal palace, the Kasubi tombs form the royal burial place of four Kabakas or kings of Buganda empire. The tombs of Kasubi were built in 1881 and are situated five kilometers from the city center.

A masterpiece of human creation, the Kasubi tombs in Uganda house the culture and traditions of the Baganda people. The architectural construct of the tombs of Kasubi exemplifies the ensemble of the Baganda palace. The Kasubi tombs reflect Ganda architecture and the design of the palace and the tombs show highly technical skills that developed over many years.

Tombs in Kasubi is the storehouse of historical, traditional, cultural and spiritual values of Baganda people. It is a significant spiritual and religious structure of Baganda. The site of the royal Kasubi tombs encloses en extensive area (30 hectares) on the hillside in the Kampala district. Much of the land in the site is used for agricultural purposes. On the top of the hill lies the palace of the former Buganda kings.

Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main building of the Kasubi tombs, kampala, is a circular structure capped by a dome. It is the main building, made up of organic materials like wood, thatch, reed,wattle and daub, that contains the four royal tombs of four Buganda kings. The significance of the Kasubi tombs lie in their spiritual identity.

A large building with a thatched roof contains all the four tombs and the tourists are taken around the place by guides who inform them of the history of Baganda and the traditions related to the tombs. A visit to Kampala remains incomplete without seeing the remarkable manifestation of Uganda historic and cultural heritage and human creativity
