The town of Jinja is located near the source of the Nile river, near the Lake Victoria in Uganda. It is situated north east to the capital city of Uganda, Kampala. The town of Jinja is considered to be the capital of the Busoga district, and is the chief town of the district having the same name, Jinja. It is the second most important commercial and industrial center in Uganda after the capital city Kampala, and houses a number of important industries and trade locations.
Jinja was established in the 1900's, as a trading post and fishing village. Its strategic location meant that transport networks were being rapidly formed, and it gradually rose in importance. It became far more crucial to the overall commercial scenario with the construction of the hydroelectric project in Owen Falls, and reached the status of a highly important industrial center by the 1950s. The infrastructure declined during the regime of Idi Amin, but has recovered since then.
Jinja, Uganda has a number of industries, and is situated at the center of a very productive area where cotton, sugarcane, corn and peanuts are abundantly produced. Manufacturing industries include refined copper, metal goods, textiles, soap and forest products. The electricity produced in the Owen Falls dam hydroelectric project supplies Uganda with most of the electricity that it uses.
Getting to Jinja is easy, as transport is abundantly available from the capital city Kampala. Buses are available, and Jinja is also an important rail station.
