Gulu is a district and town located in the northern regions of Uganda. The Gulu district is one of the most important and influential districts of the people of the Acholi tribe. It lies a considerable distance to the north of the capital city of Uganda, Kampala, and consists of four counties - Kilak, Achwa, Omoro, and Nwoya.
The Gulu Uganda was one of the homelands of the people of the Acholi tribe. It has seen a fair share of violence, because of the long history of violence against the people of the Acholi tribe by the members of the Lord's Resistance Army, a messianic Christian cult. Joseph Kony, who was the main visionary behind the formation of the Lord's Resistance Army, was born in Gulu. Most of the residents of the Gulu district are concerned with agriculture.
The town of Gulu,is the most important town and commercial center in the Gulu district in Uganda. The town is also the main military base for the government's operation against the rebel Lords Resistance Army. The favored mode of operation of the Lord's Resistance Army is to kidnap and abduct Acholi children and to train them as child soldiers. The town of Gulu was, therefore, the main place for refuge for Acholi children, who were called "night commuters", as they used to walk large distance into Gulu to spend the night into special safe houses.
The town of Gulu has an airport and hospitals which take care of the health issues of local people. Security for people of the Acholi tribe in Gulu has improved significantly over the last couple of years, and practical risks are becoming less with time.
