Uganda Parliament

Since the colonial times there have been many attempts by the colonial heads to build up a parliament in Uganda. After its independence in 1962 the parliament was finally formed. The current parliament of Uganda has 74 women members which is a very significant thing.

The Uganda parliament has a number of functions among which the most significant one is to pass laws which will provide great governance in the country. The ministers are bound to answer to the people's representative on the floor of the house. The different parliamentary committees are also responsible to the parliament. The fiscal issues of the government like taxation and loans need the sanction of the parliament. The different projects and policies of the government of Uganda are also monitored by the parliament.

The parliament of Uganda is composed of elected members of different constituencies. The new constitution which was promulgated in 1995 made the presence of one woman from each district in the parliament mandatory. People other than the members of the parliament who has the right to vote are the Vice President and the Ministers. All the members to the parliament are elected by universal Adult Suffrage.

Currently there are 215 constituency representatives in Uganda among which 79 are women, 5 are representatives of the youth, 13 ex-officio member and 5 members who represent the workers. As Uganda has the multiparty system the representatives to the parliament can be expected from all sections of people and also from all parts of the country.
