Jinja Uganda

Jinja Uganda was a small fishing village in the south eastern region of the country. The establishment of a trading post in this village by the British in 1901 was the first step towards the path of progress of this small village. The town of Jinja in Uganda soon became the second one on the level of importance in Uganda, only after the capital city of Kampala.

The location of Jinja Uganda on the birthplace of the Nile river where it flows out from Lake Victoria proves to be appropriate for the growth of trade and commerce. The easy access through the Nile was the chief reason of the growth of Jinja in Uganda as a commercial center in the past.

Telegraph lines were put up in Jinja Uganda in 1912. The same year saw the setting up of the railways in Jinja Uganda. The improvement in the communications and transportation facilities helped in the development of the small town into a bustling center of commerce of the country.

In recent times Jinja Uganda is the main center of Uganda economy. The construction of the Owen Falls Dam or the Nalubaale Dam in 1954 gave an impetus to the development of the town. Situated at a distance of 3miles downstream, this dam provided the power required for the industries.

The abundant cotton production of Jinja Uganda makes textiles an important industry of the place. The other industries of Jinja Uganda include copper smelting, processing foods, forest products, metal goods, sugar milling, brewing, plywood and cigarette manufacture.
