Uganda Food



The most common Uganda food is Matooke. This is a preparation of green bananas (plantain) which are peeled, boiled and then mashed. Uganda has an agrarian economy and so the cost of food that is grown in the local areas in Uganda is reasonable. The prices vary according to the food product and the season . Supermarkets sell imported food products from Europe.

Uganda food apart from the traditional cuisine of Uganda also consists of different kinds of desserts that make a meal full of Uganda food complete. A number of bakeries and confectioneries are there in Uganda that make bread products. Beverages form a significant aspect of Ugandan food.

In Uganda eating and drinking is a pleasure at Kampala. Some of the best restaurants are located in this city. Food in Uganda is a delicious assortment of Italian cuisine,Indian food,Greek and Chinese food and French and English cuisines. But while in Uganda it is the native and the local food of Uganda that provides the visitor with a true Uganda flavor.

There are numerous cafes and restaurants in Uganda that serve traditional Uganda food along with international and continental cuisines. Some of the well known restaurants are Streak Out(Kampala), Shanghai Chinese restaurant(Kampala), Pavement tandoori (Kampala), La Fontaine (Kampala), La Chateau restaurant (Kampala) etc.

Local people of Uganda, the natives have the food that they grow. Agriculture is the primary occupation and is done for producing food for subsistence and for marketing. The climate and the fertile soil in Uganda is perfect to grow a number of crops like coffee, banana, mango,tea, maze, groundnut, casava, soya, sweet potato, cabbage, onion, rice etc. These make up the food of Uganda that are eaten by the Ugandans and also used by them to cook traditional Ugandan delicacies.
