The Islamic status of the Central Asian country of
Turkmenistan is quite evident from its name. The name itself is a Persian synonym for the “land of Turkmen”. Although the history of
Turkmenistan dates back to more than 1000 years, the country has only recently acquired an independent status.
Turkmenistan was earlier a constituent republic of Soviet Russia and during that status was called the
Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic. It was only in 1991 that the country became a free entity and has ever since, also held regular legislative elections.
The geographical location of
Turkmenistan is between Iran to the southwest, Kazakhstan to the north west, Uzbekistan to the northeast and Afghanistan to the south east; the Caspian sea lies to the west of Turkmenistan. Although,
Turkmenistan is presently fighting poverty, current CIA records have shown that the country has achieved the
5th most speedy GDP growth in the world. The Karakum desert stretches across the vast areas of the country.
The head of state of
Turkmenistan is the president who has a tenure of 5 years as per the Constitution. Fresh elections would be held after this. The legislative elections are held on a national level and elects ministers to the Parliament for a 5 year term.
