Turkmenistan Flag

Turkmenistan's flag was adopted in the year 1992 when the country gained independence. This flag was a rather extraordinary one considering the complex design it displayed. The Turkmenistan flag is a combination of green background with the typically traditional crescent and stars in white along with a strip displaying 5 carpet designs of Turkmenistan. The 5 designs are depictions of 5 guls or patterns which are made by 5 tribal communities of Turkmenistan, hence, these 5 guls on the Turkmenistan flag are said to depict the 5 tribes of Turkmenistan.

The new Presidential decree of 1997 made certain minor changes in the flag, the national anthem and in some alphabets of Turkmenistan. In 1997 the minor changes in the Turkmenistan flag resulted in the addition of an olive branch in the national flag. The olive branch signified Turkmenistan's love of peace and its neutral status. The adoption of an official national Turkmenistan flag led the government of the country to denote a particular day, 19th February, as Flag Day since 1997.

Turkmenistan also has a standard President's flag that was formally adopted on 15 July in the year 1996. Turkmenistan's flag for the country and the Turkmenistan flag for the President share a common green background with the white crescent and stars. However, the President's flag also has a 7-headed yellow eagle holding on to a snake in its claws. The Turkmenistan flag changes slightly during a period of mourning when the flag is flown only at half-mast while there is a black ribbon bound at the top of the mast..
