Blue Mosque is the most famous of the mosques in Istanbul, Turkey. The importance of the mosque is not only because of the beauty but for being the living proof of the architectural heritage of Turkey. The Blue Mosque dates back to 1609 when the construction started.
The Blue Mosque was build on orders from Sultan Ahmet I, the then ruler of Turkey. The person in charge of this wonderful building was Mehmed Aga, the architect. Blue Mosque was completed in 1616.
The domes and semi-domes of the Blue Mosque are perfectly in proportion. It is this feature that makes the mosque different from others. Another feature that separates the Blue Mosque is the number of minarets. While most mosques have only four minarets the Blue Mosque has six minarets.
The ablution fountains in front of the Blue Mosque are a common characteristic of most mosques. Worshipers are supposed to wash their face, neck, hands and legs before entering the mosque. The beautiful fountain in the middle of the courtyard is only for decoration.
The interiors of the Blue Mosque as the name suggests is adorned with blue tiles. The marble used in the steps, pulpit and the nave is pure and beautiful. The gate exhibits the Seljuk Turkish art. The geometric design at the center of the gate is also worth notice.
The floors of the Blue Mosque are covered with rugs. Natural light coming from the 260 windows light up the interiors of the Blue Mosque. The windows have stained glass in them.
