The rate of Turkey Literacy has really gone up in the previous years. The total population of Turkey is 87.4%, in which 95.3% male and 79.6% female are literate. Turkey education system has made attendance compulsory in at least the first stages of education. But preschool programs were made non compulsory in 1953.
Turkey Literacy includes many programs. Preschool programs include students from four to six. Students from six to eleven attend the primary school. The middle schools are made for students from twelve to fourteen years. All these come under coeducational system. Attendance in primary schools is high in urban areas than in rural areas. The attendance of middle schools is not so strict, especially in rural area because students have to travel a long distance to come to the school. The rate does not exceed 60%.
To encourage higher education a law was passed in 1983 which prohibited the employment of youths younger than fourteen. Secondary school education is free in 1,300 public high schools. The Ministry of National Education supervises the rate of Turkey Literacy.
The 27 universities include 450,000 students according to the survey of 1993-94. Number of students exceeded the number of seats. They have to sit for an entrance exam. There are other institutes like technical school, agricultural and commercial schools etc.
Rural sectors suffer from lack of education. Especially women are not allowed to go to school due to some superstitions. The Ministry of National Education has conducted many literacy campaigns.
Turkey Literacy program is aiming at increasing the rate of literacy.
