Money in Turkey has developed over time. Currently the currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira.
In ancient times, the barter system was in vogue, and there was no concept of money. With the advancement of civilization, it became obsolete, due to practical difficulties and inefficiency.
Around 2,700 years ago, the first metal coins appeared in Turkey, gaining immediate popularity. Coins made of gold and silver were convenient and an accepted medium of dealings. The concept of coins was grasped by other civilizations taking the cue from ancient Turkey.
The first officially recognized Turkish money, the Lira was introduced as a gold coin in 1844 and Imperial Ottoman bank also introduced some paper money. The gold money was abandoned during the First World War, and the New Lira has come into circulation from 2005. Inflation was always a major problem in Turkey, and measures to counter its ill effects are currently being put into place.
