The staple diet of Turkey is wheat and wheat products. Other important articles of consumption include fruits and vegetables, sweeteners, olive oil and nuts. The people of Turkey do not suffer from malnutrition. The nutrition of the people is not affected by the scarcity of food but the improper distribution of food.
Turkish organization of food and agriculture also tries to maintain the standard of food products. Food safety and maintenance regulations imposed on the food products industry are the beginning of the process. The accession to EU has increased the amount of responsibility of providing quality export products.
One sector however has not achieved full impetus. The fisheries of Turkey are still under developed. Lack of proper infrastructure and facilities have kept the rich fish reserves of Turkey out of hands. In recent times, Turkey Food Agriculture Organization has started to pay attention to this sector.
