Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) began as an a Turkish Organization to achieve the twofold objective of representing the Turkish American community and to nurture the bonds of friendship between Turkey and the United States of America. Two associations worked together to set up ATAA, namely the American Turkish Association of Washington and the Maryland American Turkish Association.
The General Assembly of Turkish American Associations had its first meeting in May, 1980. 26 organizations sent their representatives to this meeting. A coordination committee was formed to formulate the constitution and bylaws of ATAA. November 16, 1980 saw the ratification of the bylaws and the election of the first board of ATAA.
The number has increased since the inception of ATAA and in recent times the strength is 62 Turkish American organizations. The financial support for the association comes from donations from the individual members as well as from the ATAA Endowment Fund.

The various activities of ATAA include sectors concerned about the education, social, political, economic, culture and heritage of Turkey. Seminars and conferences are conducted on a regular basis for the spread of awareness and educating the community of Turkish Americans. Events are also organized for the better understanding of Turkish culture.
Assembly of Turkish American Associations is a non-profit organization. It publishes a quarterly magazine The Turkish American along with other publications concerning important issues of Turkey.
