The Trinidad And Tobago elections are held at different levels starting from the general elections by the people to the presidential level elections that is confined among the members of the parliament of Trinidad and Tobago. The senate members and the house of representatives are the two most important wings of the parliament. Together, they are called the Electorate College as they elect the president of Trinidad and Tobago through secret ballot. The senators in return are appointed with the consent of the Prime minister, though a significant number of them are also appointed by the leader of the opposition party. There are 31 seats for senators, 6 of which are fixed for the leading opposition party in the country.
The House of Representatives of Trinidad and Tobago, as the name suggests are the elected heads of the 36 constituencies that make up the twin island country of Trinidad and Tobago. They are the true representative of the people of the nation. The Speaker of the House of Representatives nominate and vote for a member among themselves to be the speaker of the house. Needless to say that it is the duty of the Speaker to be unprejudiced against any member irrespective of the party a representative belongs to.
