Trinidad and Tobago Animals



Trinidad and Tobago animals are of various species. Trinidad and Tobago fauna largely inhabits species of South America and Caribbean animals as Trinidad and Tobago is a part of the South American continent. The Trinidad and Tobago geography has largely contributed to the islands rich wildlife.

The Trinidad and Tobago fauna inhabit mostly the tropical rain forests, the savannas and the wetlands. Moreover most of the land in Trinidad and Tobago is owned by the government. Therefore most of it is dedicated for the preservation of Trinidad and Tobago animals. There are various wildlife reserves, national parks and other prohibited areas meant specially for the Trinidad and Tobago fauna.

The Trinidad and Tobago fauna includes birds of 460 types, 108 types of mammals, 55 reptiles, 25 amphibians, 617 butterflies. There are 460 species of birds. To name a few birds are grebes, tinamous, petrels and shearwaters, boobies, storm petrels, tropical birds, cormorants, anhingas and so on. There are 108 species of mammals like the American manatee, otter, crab eating raccoon, wild hog, silky anteater, collared peccary and so on. Leather back Turtle, Heliconia Bihaism and Humming birds are other attractions of the island.

Trinidad and Tobago fauna also have various species of bats and howler monkeys. A visit to the Trinidad and Tobago island will give a glimpse of the varied wildlife preserved here.
