Philadelphia Museum of Art – one of the largest art museums in the US

Philadelphia Museum of Art is one of the most important art museums in Pennsylvania, USA. Located in one of the country’s culturally vibrant cities, Philadelphia Art Museum boasts of an exclusive and huge collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, potteries and handicrafts from Europe and different parts of America.

The Museum

The museum has two main divisions – the Main building and the Perelman building. The Main building contains a total of 200 captivating galleries. There are stunningly beautiful Renaissance masterpieces including paintings, exquisitely carved stone altarpieces, and different period rooms and architectural settings from across the globe.

The Perelman building is located behind a nicely preserved Art Deco facade opposite the Main building. It is an expansion of the newly renovated Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building. The renovation of the Perelman building is the first step of modernizing the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Exhibitions at Philadelphia Museum of Art

The Museum hosts more than 25 exhibitions every year, varying from comprehensive single-artist retrospectives to historical surveys or presentations on specific topics. Fabulous works of art from the museum’s collections, as well as masterpieces on loan from several other museums worldwide are featured in these exhibitions.

Philadelphia Museum of Art Collections

The museum houses more than 225,000 art works from around the world. Special exhibits include the first century collections of the Western world and the third millennium BC collections from Asia. The collections include various items such as jewelries, furniture, ceramics, carpets, sculptures, tapestries, and paintings, etc.

Prominent Asian collections include a 16th century Indian temple hall, a Japanese teahouse, and a Chinese palace hall. The museum also houses the second largest collection of arms and armor in the United States and paintings of the legendary artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, and Constantin Brancusi, as well as American modernists. Among European collections the artistic creations from the Medieval era are remarkable.

Apart from these in  Philadelphia Museum of Art hosts several events and craft shows. The museum houses a library, which is one of the major art reference libraries in the United States of America.
