Togo President is elected for a term of five years by direct popular vote method. The first President of Togo was Sylvanus Olympio belonging to Party of Togolese Unity. He was elected in April 1961. Sylvanus Olympio won unopposed.
General Eyadema was the longest serving Togolese President. He was a dictator. General Gnassingbe Eyadema was Togo President from 1967 to 2005.
Faure Gnassingbe, the son of Gnassingbe Eyadema, is the present president of Togo. After his fathers death he was elected by the direct popular voting method in April 2005. Faure Gnassingbe secured 60.15% of the total vote cast.

Togo President Faure Gnassingbe was born in 1966. He studied in Sorbonne University, France and earned a MBA from George Washington University, USA. He initially looked after the financial interests of his family business.
He entered politics in June 2002 as an elected candidate from the constitution of Blitta in central Togo. Faure Gnassingbe was a representative of the Togo People's Rally. He was later appointed as minister for telecommunications, mines and equipment by his father and President Gnassimbe Eyadema.
Faure Gnassingbe speaks little and is a very good listener. He has the loyalty of the military. Togo President Faure Gnassingbe is an excellent negotiator. He played a significant role in the negotiations with the European Union to carry on with democratic reformations in Togo.
