Togo international relations in the recent past has been considerable progressive thanks to the participation of the country in various African and world conferences and organizations. Since the 15th century, Togo has been under foreign influence. First it was the Portuguese, then the Dutch followed by the German who made it into a protectorate and then the English and the French who took over after the German defeat in the firs World War. Togo is surrounded by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the North.
Togo International Relations & The West African Regional Affairs
Togo plays an active role in activities and projects of West African Regional Affairs or WARP. This organization includes Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Sierra Leone and Liberia. It works towards improving the peace and governance in the West African countries. The earlier cold vibes between Ghana and Togo has been considerably improved through the WARP meetings.
Togo International Relations & The African Union
After the death of President Gnassingbe Eyadema and take overof the government by his son, much confusion was created and an embargo was imposed on the Togo. The African Union, another important organization including all African countries has helped remove this trade ban.
Togolese republic also has membership with the Amnesty International, UNESCO and certain other related bodies.
