Togo elections are separate for the President and the National Assembly. Both the President, and the National Assembly are elected by direct popular votes. The National Assembly, and the President both serve 5 year terms. The first Togo Presidential election was held in 1961. The first Togo Legislative Assembly election was held in 1958.
Togo elections in the form of Togo 'Plebiscite' and Togo 'Referendum' were also held six times.
Togo Presidential Election
The President of Togo is elected by the process of direct popular vote. The first such Togo election was held in April 1961. In this election, Sylvanus Olympio of Party of Togolese Unity won uncontested. In the 2nd Togo Presidential election in 1963 Nicolas Grunitzky of Togolese People's Movement party won uncontested.
The next Presidential election was held in 1979 after a gap of 16 years. During this time Togo was under military regime. In the 1979 Togo Presidential election, Gnassingbe Eyadema was elected unopposed. All Presidential elections from 1993 onwards were multi party.
Single party Presidential elections were held in 1979 and 1986. Multi party elections were held in 1961, 1963, 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2005.
Faure Gnassingbe the present President of Togo was elected in May 2005 by direct popular vote method for a 5 year tenure.
Togo National Assembly Election
Togo has a Restricted Democratic form of Government. The President appoints the Prime Minister. The members of the National Assembly are elected by direct popular voting system. The members of National Assembly can hold office for a 5 year period.
The first National Assembly was held in 1958. It was a multi party assembly election won by the Committee of Togolese Unity bagging 29 out of a total of 46 seats. Togo elections for the National Assembly were held successively in 1961, 1963, 1979, 1985, 1990, 1994, 1999 and 2002. Out of these the National Assembly elections in 1979, 1985 and 1990 were single party.
The present National Assembly of 81 seats was elected by the direct popular vote method in October 2002 for a 5 year period.
Plebiscite and Referendum were held in 1956, 1961, 1963, 1972, 1979 1nd 1992.
