Mina



There are over 40 Ethnic groups in Togo. The Mina community is one of the minor ethnic communities in Togo. These Ethnic communities primarily speak the native languages and settled in the rural areas of the country. Some of the other major Ethnic communities among the Togo People are the Ewe, who constitute about 20 to 25 percent of the population, the Kabyes, who constitute about 10 to 15 percent of the total population, the ethnic community of the Kotokoli also form 10 to 15 percent of the total population, the Mobas constitute another 10 to 15 percent and the Mina population of Togoland constitute the rest of 5 percent.

Apart from being an ethnic community, Mina is also the name of a native language, which is spoken in the southeast of Togo, especially in the Maritime Region. This language of Mina is also known as Gen , G? or Gen-Gbe. The language is also spoken in the Mono Department of Benin. Mina is a part of the Kwa sub-family, which is a major part of the African Niger-Congo language family. As surveyed by the SIL/Ethnologue, there are about 200 900 Mina-speakers in Togo and another 126 000 in Benin.

The Ewe and the Mina form the biggest community in the southern region and the Kabya community formed the largest ethnic group in Togoland in the less prosperous part of the country.
