Among the Native Togo People, the Ethnic community of Ewe form one of the two major ethnic communities. The predominant Ethnic community apart from the community of the Ewes is the Kabye. Constituting 21% of the total population, the Ewes inhabit the Southern part of the country and the Kabye inhabit the Northern part.
In a Togo Population of 4.97 million, the community of the Ewes are considered to be holding majority of posts in government services. The Ewe community hold positions as civil servants, professionals, and merchants. This figure might be the outcome of the initiative taken by the colonial administration to establish greater infrastructure in this part of the country. The fact that a majority of the Ewes might also have worked as assimilasios under the French Government, which might have assured their reservation in the Togo government cannot be ignored.
The Ewes are considered to have laid their first step in the country of Togo from the Niger River valley between the 12th and 14th centuries. With the advent of the European colonizers, the country became a main hub for slave trade. This coastal regions and the other nations surrounding it became the greatest deportment centers for slave trade and came to be known as the ' The Slave Coast'. This deportation continued for about 200 years, which saw the appalling picture of inhumanity and violation of human rights.
