The fact that East Timor is the youngest nation in the world is reason enough to affect East Timor life. The effect that it has is to a large extent derogatory for the country is still undergoing political reconstruction. The standard of East Timor life can, in fact, be called one of the lowest in the world and it is due to the long political turmoil that the country has been under. In fact, when it comes to describing East Timor life under current situations, the 3 terms that come to mind are unrest, inequality and poverty.
The UN Human Development Program has stated that East Timor's GDP is alarmingly low at just $478 and this has made East Timor, one of the most under-developed countries of the world. Such snail-slow growth rates have made the country vulnerable to civil unrest which could arise out of the people's non-satisfaction in living standards of the country. The state of East Timor life is quite depressing as over 40% of East Timorese people cannot afford to live on the standard allowance of 55 cents per day, a meager percentage of the population have been properly educated and most children are underweight due to lack of proper medical facilities.
Poor health standards are one significant factor which is affecting the standard of East Timor life. There is no such disease which has not spread among the people of East Timor in the make-shift camps that they use for staying. Although, HIV/AIDS has not had a strong impact on the country yet, lack of awareness could make the situation worse. Poor health standards are the main reason behind the life expectancy being only 56 years and an alarming rate of maternal deaths.
The industrial sector in East Timor is literally non-existent and the means of living is through agriculture. The situation in urban areas has worsened due to lack of industries which subsequently has given rise to unemployment and homelessness. However, since the country is undergoing reconstruction, it will take some more time to better the living conditions of East Timor people.
