Hospitals in the under-developed country of Timor Leste are few and medical facilities available with these hospitals do not match international standards. Yet, measures taken by the UN and other NGOs have improved hospitals in Timor Leste to a great extent and today, the Dili National Hospital is the most developed of hospitals in Timor Leste. The Dili National hospital is the only hospital in the country that serves almost the whole of the population. Although the Dili National Hospital, located in the capital of Timor Leste, tries its best to serve Timorese population from in and around the capital, it sometimes falls short of basic supplies.
This lack of supplies is noticed not just in the Dili National hospital, but in other hospitals of Timor Leste also, because the country is still in the process of nation-building. Immense political upheaval in the country has also had an effect on the health infrastructure, as a result of which hospitals are facing the brunt. The Timor Health Ministry looks over the efficient management of the donations which are made to upgrade hospitals in Timor Leste. The Dili National Hospital is aiming for a much faster rate of improvement with regard to health and administrative infrastructure. Towards the end of improving the health infrastructure within the hospital, a Hospital Working Group has been set up.
Other hospitals that operate within the country of Timor Leste are still known as secondary or referral hospitals because of their lack of proper amenities. The secondary hospitals usually serve the districts surrounding the capital city of Dili. The referral hospital in Baucau district has started functioning, while 4 more districts will be given access to these secondary hospitals of Timor Leste.
