The country of East Timor is situated in the eastern region of the island Timor. In the year 1520, the Portugal first colonized the country. The Independence of East Timor dates long back in the year 1976. The Independence of East Timor was announced on July 16, 1976. In the year 1613, the Dutch regime gained control over the western part of the island. Portugal and Netherlands had a big fight with each other over the possession of the island. Ultimately in the year 1860, a treaty divided the eastern part of the Timor to the Portugal.

In the year 1949, the Netherlandis gave up their possession to the Dutch East Indies and thus the country Indonesia came into being. The Portugese ruled the country till 1975. After 455 years of Portugese ruling, the island became vulnerable. In the year 1976, 16th July, the country became an independent nation. After that, the Indonesian's invasion devastated the country. No other country, except Australia gave recognition to the invasion. The western countries and the United States of America approved the Indonesian invasion.

The history of the independence of East Timor remembers the Indonesia's attack on the East Timorese leading them to utter penury and many of them died from famine, disease. In the year 1998, B.J Habibe, the president of Indonesia announced of holding a referendum on the independence of the East Timorese. The time for the referendum on self rule came closer and the scuffle between the two parties, Indonesian paramilitary forces and the guerillas rose to a great extent. In the year 1999, most of the East Timorese people voted for the freedom of the East Timor. The country, East Timor also witnessed the international pressure from the foreign countries which forced Indonesia to permit UN forces in the East Timor.
